TikTok's bio link rules: who gets a link and what belongs behind it

TikTok is the strictest major platform about links. Captions do not link, comments do not link, and the one clickable spot — the website field on your profile — is gated. The gate has two doors, and which one you take changes what you are allowed to put behind it.

The rules as they stand

The requirements are simple to state and easy to find stated wrongly, so here is their shape as of this writing — TikTok adjusts them quietly, so confirm in the app before planning around any single line.

The 1,000-follower line is the one people resent, and the business-account switch looks like a free bypass. It is a bypass with a trade, covered next. One more wrinkle: TikTok's moderation treats outbound links conservatively, and pages that trip its commerce or community rules can get a link suppressed regardless of your follower count.

  • A personal account gets the clickable website field at 1,000 followers
  • A business account gets the field immediately, at any follower count
  • The field is most reliably edited in the mobile app, under Edit profile
  • Links pasted into captions or comments render as plain text; only the bio field is clickable

The business account trade

Switching to a business account takes a minute and unlocks the link field on day one. The costs are real but often acceptable: business accounts are limited to TikTok's commercial music library and lose the general trending-sound catalog, and the account is expected to represent a business, with link destinations to match. For a shop, a service, or a creator who sells, the trade is usually worth taking. For a personal account built on trending audio, losing sounds can hurt more than the link helps.

Decide by the content you actually post, not by the link you want this week. An account that lives on licensed audio should stay personal and grow to the threshold; an account that mostly publishes original video loses little.

While you are under 1,000

The follower gate limits the clickable field, not your ability to route people. The standard patterns while you wait are unglamorous and work.

That last point is the quiet one. The address you will eventually put in the bio should exist before the gate opens, collecting your destinations, so the unlock is a paste rather than a scramble.

  • Say the destination out loud in the video and keep it short enough to type
  • Pin a comment carrying the URL as text; motivated viewers copy it
  • Point people at another profile of yours that already has a link, usually Instagram
  • Keep the future address stable now, so the day the field unlocks you print one URL and never revise it

A TikTok viewer who taps your bio link arrives mid-scroll with seconds of patience, and they tapped because a specific video told them to. The page they land on should honor that specific promise first — the product from the video, the recipe, the episode — in the same words the video used. The general argument for matching the page to the post is laid out in the Instagram version of this problem, and it applies to TikTok with less patience and a faster thumb.

A link-in-bio page is the standard answer, and a good one here, because TikTok's single field has to serve every video you have ever posted. Keep the top slot synchronized with your latest push, keep the list short, and label links by what the viewer gets. If you are unsure whether you need a page at all or just one strong link, the decision framework in what is a link-in-bio page settles it in a minute.

The rule that outlasts the rules

Platform link policies change without notice; the gate was different two years ago and may be different next year. The durable move is owning one address that every platform's single link points at — a page you control, at a handle that survives follower counts, account-type switches, and whichever platform is ascendant when you read this. Pubtact's link page is built for that job — but whoever builds yours, the discipline is the same: keep the top slot synced to your latest video, in the video's own words. That edit moves more taps than any follower milestone.
